Once you know how to read a supplement label, half the marketing falls away. The front of the bottle is advertising; the back is where the truth lives. Here is how to decode it in under a minute.
Watch for “proprietary blend”
When a label lumps several ingredients into one “proprietary blend” with a single total weight, you cannot tell how much of each you are getting. Sometimes that hides an effective dose — more often it hides a sprinkle of the good stuff (“fairy dusting”) so the ingredient can be named without being present in a meaningful amount.
Look for actual amounts
Trustworthy brands list each ingredient with its specific quantity, so you can compare it against what is generally considered a reasonable serving. Transparency is one of the strongest signals that a company is confident in its formula.
If a brand will not tell you how much of an ingredient is in the bottle, treat that as your answer.
A quick label checklist
- Are ingredient amounts listed individually, or hidden in a blend?
- Is the caffeine or stimulant content stated clearly?
- Are there third-party testing or quality seals?
- Does the serving size match what you will realistically take?
